PBS participated at the aerocosmic expo MAKS 2019 and celebrated the time of 20 years from the beginning of cooperation with the manufacturers of Russian helicopters

První Brněnská Strojírna Velká Bíteš (PBS) has supplied the auxiliary power units (APU) for Russian helicopters Mi-8, Mi-17 and Mi-171 for 18 years. The company is going to produce a thousandth piece of this unit designated as Safir 5K/G MI by the end of this year. The first meeting with the manufacturers of Russian helicopters was carried out at the aero expo MAKS in 1999. So, by this year’s participation, PBS celebrated the anniversary of 20 years from the beginning of their cooperation. At the just-finished expo MAKS 2019, PBS has presented an energy unit Safir 5K/G MIS, which is one of the Safir 5K/G MIS version designated for installation in the already-operated helicopters as a replacement for the original Ukranian APU. The new PBS TJ150 jet engine and starter generator EMG-200 designed for the Ansat helicopters were other showpieces of PBS.

PBS focuses on development of turbine power units, auxiliary power units (APU) and air conditioning systems (ECS) for various types of aircraft and helicopters. PBS has been developing and producing the aeronautical technologies for more than 50 years. It has made more than 6,000 installations of the auxiliary power units for this period of time. PBS is one of the 4 companies in the world which owns a certificate for development, production and maintenance of the APU given by the European Agency EASA.

„It has been more than 18 years since we started our supplies of the auxiliary power units of Saphire for Russian helicopters Mil. Therefore, we are expecting an important milestone in the near future, regarding our production. In the autumn, PBS is going to produce its thousandth auxiliary power unit Safir 5K/G MI developed for helicopters Mi-8, Mi-17 and Mi-171,“ says Mr. Milan Macholán, CEO of PBS. „The existing configuration of the PBS' APU guarantees an opportunity of continuous operation for 6 hours. It belongs to the top in the power category up to 100 kW, which is documented by obtained and repeatedly defended certificates DOA, POA and MOA from the agency EASA,“ adds Mr. Milan Macholán.

PBS has also presented its other APU Safir 5K/G MIS which is a modified version of the unit of Safir 5K/G MI, at MAKS 2019 exposition. It is designed to be installed in already operated helicopters Mil as a replacement for the original Ukranian APU.

The new jet engine PBS TJ150 was another PBS' showpiece at the aero expo MAKS 2019. „PBS TJ150 is our most powerful and completely new jet engine designed to be applied in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Its development was finished last year upon innovation of our best selling jet engine PBS TJ100, in which we achieved higher tensile strength while maintaining the same outer diameter and engine weight by using the demanding design changes,” explained Mr. Milan Macholán.

PBS invests large amounts of money in development of existing and new products. This is the reason why they can continually increase the time limits to overhauls for the unit of Safir 5K/G MI. They have invented a completely new starter generator EMG-200 for Ansat helicopters, which was the third product exhibited at MAKS 2019. „Now, we supply tens of pieces of this newly invented starter generator EMG-200 per year. For the new type of helicopter Mi-171A2, we have invented an air conditioning system which is able at the same time to cool and heat both cockpit and cargo area, ,“ explains Mr. Milan Macholán.
